Ingredients: Hyaluronic acid in skin care products

What is it?
Hyaluronic acid is a natural glycosaminoglycan (polysaccharides that are an important component of connective tissue) and can be derived from multiple resources. It is naturally present in human body: cushions joints, nerves, hydrates skin and hair, and fills the eye.

How it works-skin?
HA is located in the collagen of skin. It helps in the formulation of collagen, which promotes firmness and elasticity. Unlike collagen, Hyaluronic Acid is able to penetrate the skin’s upper layers to improve and benefit the skin when applied topically. Hyaluronic acid is a major component of skin, where it benefits tissue repair and protection.

As we age, skin moisture can drop significantly, which makes the skin lose elasticity and expose the signs of aging on the skin. Hyaluronic acid plays a critical role in skin health with its unique ability to hold in moisture (1000 ml of water per gram of hyaluronic acid).

How it is labeled on ingredient list?
The hyaluronic acid that is best, is made from sodium salt so technically it is Sodium Hyaluronate. Sodium Hyaluronate has a much smaller molecular size than hyaluronic acid and therefore has the ability to penetrate the epidermis.

INCI names: Hyaluronic Acid, Sodium Hyaluronate, HA, Acide Hyaluronique, Acido HialurĂ³nico, Glycoaminoglycan, Glycoaminoglycane, Hyaluran, Hyaluronan, Hyaluronate de Sodium, Hyaluronate Sodium, Hylan, Sodium Hyaluronate.

Conclusion: HA is one of most natural and imo best ingredient, that is used in cosmetic products. I think it can really improve level of moisture in the skin and consequently the appearance of the skin. I've tried two products with HA in it, face serum and body lotion, but more about that tomorrow, so stay tuned.

Hope this helps you, enjoy.
